Vocal Part 2- Look at All the Bursting People...

Remixed from Vocal part 1. The Vocal 2 selection was pulled from bits and pieces of the finished and exported version of Vocal 1- The Bag Lady. There is some mircoediting, but by and large this is not about effects. It is an exercise intended to show how just about anything, can be made into just about anything else. This selection was made as an accompaniment to Vocal 1, and I think it adds to that piece quite a bit. The first story has an overt serious tone, and rightly so, but this blog is in no way meant to be serious. I think by listening to this piece you are able to really appreciate vocal 1 in a new way.

Vocal part 1- The Bag Lady

In this assignment we were asked to record either a rant or an interview and edit it to under 3 minutes. I have a rant that I composed of an experience that I shared with my girlfriend a few weeks ago. In this assignment we also had the ability to add in sound effects, however I really believe that due to the content of my rant those sound effects may have detracted from the listeners experience. I decided to leave out any effects, as they were not a requirement. We also learned some essentials of compression and equalization while working on this assignment, and were required to apply both.

Unnamed Sound Project

In completing this project the goal was to capture two distinct sounds, one indoors and one outdoors. Both had to be well recorded, but difficult to identify for the listener. Have a listen to both and try to guess what each recording captures.

Outdoor Recording ~ 40sec

The outdoor recording was made on south 13th street near a Macco Body shop. I began on the 30 bus southbound until I reached Wisconsin Avenue, there I would change buses to the 19 heading south along 13th street until I arrived at my destination. I ride the 30 often, but until working on this project I had never rode the 19 bus. Click Here for a map of the route. I took some time to look for areas of the city that were industrial-ish and near bus lines, this area felt like a good choice. I decided to stay away from parts of the city I am familiar with for this portion of the project and I think the resulting sound is pretty cool.

Indoor Recording ~ 49sec

This recording was made indoors, and I believe it is a very strong recording in both its quality and ability to puzzle the listener. I would share where I captured it but that alone could give it away. I will just say it was somewhere along Downer Avenue, click here for a map of the area. and I did get the permission of the owners to make my recording there before I began. In no way did I manipulate this sound, I basically walked in, recorded for 10 minutes at three different levels, and exported a selection that I felt was the most interesting. Good luck figuring this one out!

Field Recording -- Drift

Here are three selections from field recordings I recently captured. Creating these recordings was a very involved process. It began with constructing the microphone I would record with. From a few inexpensive pieces, and with the guidance of my professor I assembled a surprisingly sensitive microphone that probably would have cost me $200+. Once I had successfully averted being gouged by the microphone industrial complex (aka MIC), the next step was to decide on a drift strategy. I decided let a friend take me for a short ride away from my home, I would then get out the car, walk a bit, and see where I wound up. I made it a point to avoid places I had been before, however it was a bit difficult, so I allowed myself to walk through places I had been before so long as it had been a few years since my last visit.

My favorite recording is the third selection. Not to take anything away from the other two, it was just a bit more fun and bizarre in its development. My friend dropped me off near the Milwaukee County Historical Society on Old World Third Street, so I decided to head on my way down the river walk... I would go south until I reached Clybourn street, and then turn around, meandering along the eastern shore of the Riverwalk back northwards. Upon turning around I saw a perfect place to sit, a handsome old wooden bench just on the rivers edge. I could hear water pouring from a downspout, a train off in the distance and seagulls overhead, nice.
The walk was pleasant enough, just a little before midnight and very few people were out. As I sat on the bench and set up to record, I noticed someone had walked out from around the boat rental office across the river, just northwest of where I sat. I didn't pay much attention at first, but the figure literally stood there, across the river and stared directly at me for a full, and very uncomfortable fifteen minutes. It was one of those times where you have to remind yourself you aren't doing anything illegal. He was chubby, and looked to be a rent-a-cop, but my nerves still tingled. I'm not sure if he thought I was preparing to steal a Great Lakes ferry, or if he was suspicious of all my dangling wires, but as soon as I got up to walk north again, he popped up and disappeared around the corner. Thankfully, and mercifully, I was not "disappeared" by some Coast Guard reject. I survived to meet my friend at BW3's shortly thereafter for some jerked wings and a beer, and of course, to share this recording.

Cheers

This piece is the first bit of sound editing I have ever attempted. I tried to create a piece that would take the listener through a few spaces. I focused on making a sound space that transitioned smoothly yet instantly from one environment to the next, and I feel I accomplished this to a certain degree. My first edit of this piece was manufactured to feel like a construction zone, but I felt it was too literal, which is why I reworked the project into what it is now. I feel what I have developed is much more ambitious and well rounded. I recommend listening to it through you favorite high-quality headphones.

Enjoy, feel free to post any comments you may have.
